Find out how the cabinet is held together, screws and glue are fine but staples are not. Interlocking joints and tenon joints are the best choice. Check for signs of poor workmanship and patching. Solid wood is better than veneer. Check the back and the bottom of the cabinet. The back needs to be solid and should not bend under pressure.
